EC to assess Bosnia’s progress for EU accession talks
The European Council said it has requested the European Commission to deliver a progress report on Bosnia and Herzegovina by March 2024, with the goal of deciding on the start of European Union (EU) accession talks.
The Council said on Thursday it will open accession negotiations with Bosnia, once the necessary degree of compliance with the membership criteria is achieved.
The Commission said in November that Bosnia lacks significant progress in key areas such as public administration reform, judiciary independence, anti-corruption efforts, and migration management and needs to apply further efforts to achieve the key goals set out in the Commission Opinion on its EU membership application.
In December 2022, the Council awarded EU candidate country status to Bosnia, which had submitted its application for EU membership in February 2016.
